Welcome to Additional Military Layers (AML).
AML is a NATO-wide initiative, co-ordinated by the UKHO. These pages have been
created to widen and deepen understanding of the AML concept and provide a
channel to communicate key technical documents and information.
The UKHO provides specialist information to its defence customers.
Traditionally, this has been provided as overlays or modified charts and more
recently as bespoke digital products designed for a particular purpose. AML now
provides the defence customer with a unified, current product, satisfying the
needs of all defence users.
The material on these Additional Military Layers pages is provided for your
use. Views and opinions expressed in documents not prepared by the UKHO and
posted to these pages do not reflect those of the UKHO, and the UKHO gives no
warranty of any type as to the accuracy, completeness or currency of any
information provided in such documents. The
terms and conditions of use of this website also apply to these pages.
For additional information relating to NATO development of the AML concept
please follow the link via the NATO logo. Only users that have been supplied
with a valid username and password will have access to the site. If you
experience difficulties gaining access, please contact the AML Service Delivery
Manager at aml@ukho.gov.uk.

Technical Workshops
Technical Workshops are held at regular intervals in order to facilitate
involvement by industry in the development of the AML concept and capability.
They are intended to promote an open technical dialogue across the entire AML
stakeholder community. Click here to

Sample Data
AML data is now being produced by the UKHO and agencies in other nations. For
developers of systems that will use AML, sample datasets are available for
download. The datasets are encapsulated using the International
Hydrographic Organisation's S57 exchange standard for digital hydrographic
data.
Product Specifications
NATO-endorsed Product Specifications for the current range of AML products and
their associated S57 exchange standard implementation annexes are provided
here.
Production Specifications
NATO-endorsed Production Specifications (as distinct from the AML Product
Specifications) describes details of how the content of any given AML dataset
is to be encoded. This document covers the entirety of AML and is necessary to
ensure that datasets are not only conformant to the AML Product Specifications
but that the data produced by a wide range of producers is consistent in
support of coalition interoperability. The document is provided
here.
Object and Attribute Catalogue
Click here to access the Object and Attribute
Catalogue, which covers the data models from published AML product
specification.
